Since you can't set the hook with the same power you have on big rig boats, I highly suggest using super sharp hooks. As a general rule, if the hook doesn't stick to your skin, it isn't as sharp as it could be. This doesn't mean throwing a hook away as soon as it won't stick to your skin. This does mean though, that if you can apply pressure, and it won't pierce your skin, it won't pierce a fishes strong mouth either. Sharp hooks also leave a smaller entry point. This heals quicker on fish, but also allows the barb on the hook to do its job.

Flathead Catfish

The tiny eyes and flattened forehead make this catfish easy to identify. Their coloring is light brown and has some black or darker mottling of the back and sides. The belly can range from pale yellow to creamy white with smooth, no scale skin.

Flatheads are sometimes called shovelheads, mud cats, Johnnie cats, and yellow cats.

Their usual habitats are the large rivers. They mostly like cloudy water and currents that move slow and can be found in some canals, lakes, rivers and reservoirs.

The flathead cats like warm water temperatures ranging in the mid 70s to the low to mid 80s. They spend their winters with large groups of flat heads mostly in large bodies of water that have sufficient cover that will break down the current. Once they find their ideal spot they just lay at the bottom of the water while silt accumulates to cover their body.

Sunfish are one of their favorites and makes this a popular bait to catch the flat heads. Some of the larger flatheads will eat carp, other catfish, and even largemouth bass.

Striped Bass fishing in Cape Cod Bay can be fantastic. The Cape is well known for striped bass and is definitely one of the best locations to fish to striped bass. Race Point off of Provincetown is world famous for sport fishing. And there are many great charter boat captains on the Cape. We filmed a great striped bass and bluefish show called Fishguts, with Ed McDonough, Al Howard and Capt Rich Schelle onboard The Schelfish out of Plymouth.

It seems on most days when you go for striped bass you will catch fish as long as you pay attention to the feed. The Fingers can be a very lucrative spot in mid summer during the midnight tides. I prefer the black Fishguts Chum Tube Eel trolled at a slow speed of 2kts using lead core line. We have caught several fish over 40lbs in the area.

There are a number of ways to fish for Bass. You can cast bucktails, rubber eels, kastmasters or hopkins lures. An angler can also bottom fish for stripers.

Chumming also works very well with striped bass fishing in Cape Cod Bay. Chumming is done by setting out a chum slick of clams, pogie oil, mackerel chunks etc. Remember not to over chum. Entice to fish to that boat but do not over feed them. After the chum slick is started, throw a live eel or float a fresh piece of bait similar to what your slick is and let it drift out with you chum.

These are the suggestions I have for someone who would like to start surf fishing. Lots of surf anglers have got their start surf fishing by going with their dad or a friend That's fine but it takes a lot longer to get all the knowledge you would like to acquire. I think there's a better way of going about it.

Bass will bite on a lot of things but they like the bait to have some action to it. If your using live bait, just use night crawlers. You can either break the night crawler up or use the whole thing. By using the whole crawler, this will make only the bigger bass bite on the crawler.

Bass really like those scum frogs. When you put some action to them, they really nail them! They a good in heavy vegetation as I said before. Fake grubs work well to. Power bait makes all sorts of grubs.

Crank Bait

Crank Baits are another type of lure that works fairly well. This type of lure is designed to look very lively and real to the Bass. This makes it very effective when used properly.

Try to use these more often in medium depth waters. You can try them out in shallow waters but they usually don't work as well. Avoid them in deep waters as they usually don't work at all there.

Fishing for trout is a very enjoyable activity, but when it comes to being consistently successful trout fishing can be quite challenging. In this article I'm going to provide you with 3 tips to have more success when it comes to fishing for these multi colored beauties. These tips are effective for the four main species of river and stream dwelling trout: rainbow, brook, brown, and cutthroat.

All of these species of trout can be caught out of the same (or similar) water in most cases, and the techniques used are the same (or similar). I've personally been using every one of these tips while fishing for trout for more than twenty five years and know how effective they are. I also know that these tips will be equally as effective for anyone who chooses to implement them.

Let's get down to business, shall we?

Remember Your Hands - What do I mean by remember your hands? The fact is that trout have a very sensitive sense of smell and can easily detect unnatural scents on their prey. If they detect an unnatural scent (such as the odor of human) on your bait, they are much less apt to bite your offering. This is why you want to "remember your hands", and make sure that your hands are free of any unnatural scents that might be present. This is easily accomplished by rubbing a handful of grass into your hands before baiting up. Trout attracting sprays can also be sprayed on your bait to mask any unnatural scents.
Remember Your Line - Fishing for trout is usually performed in cold, clear water and the less visible your fishing line is to the fish, the better. Whenever you are trout fishing you always want to use fishing line that's as light as possible and that you are comfortable with. I personally use four pound test for almost all of my trout fishing, and have found through experience that any line heavier than six pound test is overkill. Always use light line when fishing for these fish.
Remember Your Hooks - Many anglers use hooks that are much larger than they should be. Anytime that you're fishing for trout you want to use hooks that are small and sharp. Most trout fishermen use hooks that are much too large in an attempt to make their bait appear natural. This is easily remedied by using gang hooks when fishing for trout. Whether you are fishing in the flowing water of a river or stream or a lake that's been planted with trout, gang hooks are your best bet. Many trout are also "missed" due to dull hooks, so change your hooks often (or carry a hook sharpener) in order to make sure that your hooks are as sharp as possible.

When you consider the various extreme sports shark fishing may not come to mind. However sport fishing for sharks is just about as extreme as it gets. Here are a few tips to help you understand the basics of this exciting sport.

People fish for sharks for various reasons. Some people like the thrill of actually participating. Others actually would like to catch a shark and if that's your goal the best time to do it is in June.

The temperature is not to hot yet and you will be able to attract more sharks. If you decide to go a little later in the summer you should consider the water temperatures and find as cool of a spot as you possibly can.

Being prepared for a shark fishing trip is a must. You will need to include the proper gear and chum. You will want to choose rods and reels that can handle up to 300 pound fish or more. You will use three to five baits in the water at a time therefore you'll need many rods and reels set up in advance.

You should use a rod that is a 50 to 80 pound class rod. Running chum is the best way to track the sharks to be prepared for the mess that leaves. Also be sure and bring a harness and safety straps so you do not fall overboard!

Sharks swim at different levels and temperatures. You want to know in advance what species of shark you are fishing for.

Keep your line out of the way and stay at the highest rock and holder on the particular side of the boat that you are fishing from. Attach your bait, attach a weight or balloon on the line, and implant it approximately 80 feet.

The second rod should go down 60 feet while resting in the trolling holder. This line is also attached to the midshipmen with a rubber band.

Your third line will be set down 30 feet with no balloon and rather free of bait. Also be sure your drags are loose so you'll be alerted by the clicking sound of the real. If you color code your balloons it's easier to see which one is being pulled on.

If you're lucky enough to get a shark be ready. Sharks will be agitated and how they act once you hook one will be different.

Once you have a shark close to the boat have someone help you bring it in. You should hand wire the shark into the boat as those are sturdy and will not break.

If you are going to keep the shark gaff and rope in by its tail. Only keep it if you're planning on eating it. Otherwise you can still get your picture taken without killing it and then release it.

The brown trout, or Salmo Trutta, is also known by other names including German brown trout, German trout, English brown trout, European brown trout or Brownies. The brown trout is generally a small fish. It ranges in length from 16 inches to about two feet. It weighs up to eight pounds. The coloring on this fish tends to be light brown on the backs and silvery on the sides and bottom.

The brown trout is natively a European fish. In the waters of the Atlantic and even into western Asia is where they were originally found. They were introduced in the United States and Canada in 1883. They can now be found in most of the Canadian waters and the Great Lakes. The fish themselves seem to have had trouble being successful in the Canadian waters, but have been successful in Lake Michigan. When introduced there, they proved to be able to withstand intense degraded habitats that other trout could not survive in.

Rutland Water offers 3,100 acres of some of Europes best trout fishing. Set in lovely rolling countryside, a day at Rutland is always a pleasure for the rawest novice and the most experienced international match angler. On a water as large as Rutland, I makes real sense to get local knowledge and the fishery staff here really are welcoming and experienced. Nigel Savage, Nathan Clayton and the rest of the Rutland team are enthusiasts who fish the water themselves regularly. As they like to say, they know their fishing, they understand their water better than anyone - and they have years of experience in helping others to enjoy their sport.

Just a word about Rutland in the autumn and early winter. More and more anglers are finding that, brilliant though the summer sport is, as the year begins to wane the quality of the fish themselves becomes outstanding. Many of the very big fish are caught on fry imitations - not surprising, considering the millions of coarse fish fingerlings that inhabit the water. However, by the late summer, insect hatches are extravagant and dry flies and buzzer fishing in the surface film can produce some excellent fishing. The best brown of all in 2005 (11lb) was caught off the bank using a floating line and a small diawl bach!

Facilities at Rutland are excellent, with a fully-equipped tackle shop offering everything the angler might need. There is a large and well- maintained fleet of sixty-five powered boats, and the fishing lodge is the place to glean information and reasonably priced food and drink. Another great idea is the introduction of a special low priced one fish permit for beginners who can also hire tackle inexpensively from the lodge. Courses are run and individual tuition is available for anglers of all standards. So, if on holiday, you can really make this a family day out.

The fishery is open between 1 April and 31 December. Permits can be obtained at the Rutland Water Fishery Lodge on the South Shore. The current records are 14lb 12oz for brown trout and 13lb 8oz for rainbow trout.
